"Because I'm happy"

I wore this to school sometimes and it was totally cool because every student and teacher and cleaner in the place was 100% accustomed to how I dress. A bit of casual cosplay never hurt anyone.
Shirt: sister's wardrobe
Pinafore: Primark
Boots: Doc Martens

I'm at uni now and I'm going to get super busy, so this will probably be my last post in a while. I feel like this blog has been a major hobby of mine for the past two and a half years, but because I've always known I couldn't keep this up in uni so sort of eased this place into retirement, I feel okay about it. Maybe you can catch me on Tumblr? Haha, I don't even know. This whole dentistry thing I feel is going to get hard. Thanks for sticking around!

Hair down

on deviantART
A few weeks ago it was announced that Shulk got into the new Super Smash Bros. I love Dunban a million times more but I'm still so happy for Shulk, because it means this incredible game is getting some recognition. And Dunban is in the final smash chain attack, yay! It's a shame he's wearing clothes though

Ummmm this is Melia. Her hair is usually tied up but I think she looks nice with it down.

Lyra Belacqua

I'm quite sure I was ten years old when I read the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman. Consequently, my memory of it is very hazy, and I could do with rereading it, especially as it sits in my sister's bookshelf all ready for me, waiting.

Luckily I caught the film running on telly and noticed that Lyra, played by a Dakota Blue Richards, has enough costume changes for me to make a post about her. American renaming baffles me, so I can't quite account for why 'Northern Lights' was changed to 'The Golden Compass' except to be more consistent with the other titles in the trilogy.

Lyra's wardrobe changes with her circumstances, and if you've read or watched this before, you'll know her circumstances change a lot. Nevertheless, whether she's in a posh townhouse or in the middle of a glacier, she's always dressed practically but creatively, using colour and texture to fit in with her surroundings.

'The Golden Compass' film was released in 2007, but Lyra's pinafores fit right into the current trend. The tartan one is to die for, though I can't find any more images of it, unfortunately.

The embroidered detailing of Lyra's coat is just beautiful, and the gold trim and combination of burgundy and cream colours give it quite an imperial look. The leather satchel is of course to contain her precious Alethiometer.

I think my favourite ensemble, however, is her massive chunky knit cardigan with red tights. I'm a big fan of coloured opaque tights and wouldn't have thought of matching it to a big cardi like this, but I think it looks very cute. The different hues and fuzzy textures in the cardigan with her fur boots make her clothes really interesting to look at, which is what I aim for when dressing.

For me, the blue dress definitely conjures up Alice in Wonderland, which is very appropriate for her age, and how she is flung into the depths of a complicated and furtive adult world. Below is what Lyra wears while on the Gyptians' boats.

Why I want really long hair

At present moment, my hair looks a lot like this wig, with a full fringe (symmetrical, straight across) and about waist-length. My last proper haircut was summer 2012 - I couldn't really understand the mumbly Chinese hairdresser's questions so didn't really know what I was agreeing to, but I walked out with thinned, armpit-length, slightly layered hair. I didn't intend it to be cut that short but he did a very good job of it. Around winter 2012 my mum trimmed it a bit, taking off probably a few centimetres, and since then I've done nothing but snip off individual split ends now and then. (Though I still have loads of split ends. Urgh.) As of this afternoon I have decided that I am also going to grow out my fringe. There, I've typed it, and I'm going to do it now. To motivate myself, here are the reasons I want long hair.

"You are lost, you can never go home"

dress: New Look
bag: Restyle.pl
sandals: Clarks
Evenstar: birthday present from O
bracelets: Accessorize, Christmas present from K

This is my hair on a good day.

One of my most prized possessions is this Evenstar necklace O got me for my birthday. She really likes Lord of the Rings too, so it was difficult for her to part with it! I adore jewellery from one of my many obsessions because I feel awesome wearing it, and it's a great conversation starter. For example, on the taster days for my new school two years ago I quite deliberately wore the One Ring round my neck in the hope of finding fellow-minded people. It worked a treat and I'm going to try it when I go to uni too.

Stripes

I've found that I pretty much never wear anything stripey. It's just not a part of my wardrobe. That's not to say I don't think they can look amazing though. I've also found that, whatever your size, you don't need to be scared of even the boldest of stripes, because it's all about balancing your shape out. (Take a lesson from Gok!) Here are eight of my favourite stripey looks I found on LB.

Pea Head

on deviantART
If you're my friend and it's your birthday in the summer holidays when I have sackloads of time, this happens. I spend one of my mornings staring at multiple photos of your face in an attempt to draw you something nice. It only looks a little like her and I ran out of space on the page to make her hair long enough but it will do.

"You may rise to find the sun"

I got into uni! And now I am really worried. I was so ready for this but now I feel I am really not. What's probably going to happen is I'll get there with all my stuff and sit down and cry for a week until lectures start and I actually have to start learning things again. Anywho.
One Ring: Mordor
t-shirt: H&M
bag: 'Made in Italy'
shorts: Peacocks
socks: Next
boots: Safiya

Aren't these little shorts the cutest? I'd been looking round for some ultra-comfortable loose shorts for summer, but was reluctant to spend £20 on them, but then I found these in Peacocks for less than £7. They feel like pyjamas, and because they're shorts, I can roll around in them without flashing any unfortunates who happen to be around.

Badge collection

In one of my drawers there is a medium-sized black box sitting quietly in the corner. Every now and again, this box is gently tipped upside-down onto the bed under the sun, and its contents come sprawling out into a pile of pleasing disarray.

This is my badge collection. Some are inherited from my sister, but I treasure every single badge in my box, because they each carry some kind of memory association, whether it with to a time, a place, an old friend, or a new friend. Many are souvenirs, a couple I found on the ground, some were gifts.

A close-up of a few of my favourites
My old-time favourite is the beautiful blue painted mask in the bottom left, which was a present to my sister from her friend. Since early childhood, I remember sneaking into my sister's room to take out her black box of badges (it was a watch box back then) to take out the mask and turn it over in my fingers, admiring its composure and elegance.

A badge with a lot of sentimental value for me is the white seal, also in the bottom left. My best friend and Wifey gave it to me in primary school, where I wore it on my jumper every day. It now lives in a special little blue box with a few bracelets and the treble clef, also presents from Wifey.

Of course, I also had to show you close-ups of my Pokemon and Zelda badges!

Swag

38 swags
sadly the sides aren't quite so photogenic
My friend C came over earlier this week and because we're swag people we used up some of our swag making a super swag cake. But it's okay because we have loads of swag left because we are made of swag.

That is all.

"Clear the way for my crash-landing"

necklace: TK Maxx
top: M&S
skirt: Gok for Tu, Sainsbury's
sandals: Clark's

My mum's had these sandals for ages and I tried them on recently and found out that they now fit me! Now it's like I have a new pair of shoes. Anyway, here's that skirt I was on about before. The skirt's colour is darker than it should be and it doesn't have that sheen, but I still think it looks nice. I certainly wouldn't have bought it at full price but £10 I don't think was unreasonable. I'm not even wearing a petticoat under it, but it still has that awesome shape.

Tooth Fairy 3

on deviantART
Though I've drawn Tooth a million times already, there are just so many ways to try and fail at her feathers, and colouring her in is always fun/frustrating, so it hasn't got quite boring yet. My pose reference for this was actually Midna, because they're both floaty sprite thingies. I quite like this drawing, though the part that I hate most is how spikey and unconvincing her head feathers are. And, background... haha... no.

New stuff

I have no willpower.

Skirt: Tu, Sainsbury's
I bought this just now for a tenner down from £30, as apparently it's a damaged product. I compared it with the full-priced ones and I think what's happened is that someone bought this skirt, washed it at a really high temperature so the fabric's shininess has disappeared so the colours are slightly duller, and then returned it to the shop. It's got a lot of volume and sits right at my waist so I'm going to have a lot of fun flouncing around in this.

Dress: New Look
Sight-seeing in Italy involves a lot of churches, so I needed a long dress for my holiday there, which I'll be posting more pictures of very soon. I don't usually wear maxi skirts or dresses so this one makes me feel really dramatic, plus it's very light and comfortable because I don't wear a bra with it. If you're looking for this dress, it's in the teens' section.

Swimsuit: Next
When you buy clothes from airport shops you don't need to pay tax on it, so I got a slight reduction on this gorgeous white swimsuit. I want to wear it all the time even though I'm not at the beach, but no one cares if I wear weird stuff on my own at home, right?
